Overview of the General Education System

Though Moldovan history dates back centuries, it makes most sense to speak of the modern education system in Moldova in context of its origin within the Soviet education system that replaced the majority of the earlier educational institutions and systems in the country. During the Soviet period, Moldovan and Russian were used as the languages of instruction. Moldova was relatively underrepresented among the higher educated population compared to other Soviet republics in this period. Since Moldova gained independence in 1991, it has been reforming its education system, introducing Romanian (recognized as equivalent to Moldovan) as a widespread language of instruction and gradually bringing the system in line with the European standards by joining the Bologna process. The education in Moldova has remained a somewhat contentious topic due to the ongoing, albeit dormant, conflict in the east of the country.

Education in Moldova is overseen by the Ministry of Education and Research, which is responsible for setting national standards, curricula, and policies for all levels of education. The Ministry coordinates with local education authorities across regions and districts to implement policies and reforms. Higher education institutions, including universities, must meet standards set by the Ministry of Education and Research to receive accreditation, ensuring that they meet national academic and professional benchmarks. In addition to the Ministry of Education and Research, local authorities of education under the regional governments have some oversight over educational institutions in their respective regions, especially in terms of managing resources and maintaining school operations.

Moldova operates a compulsory education system. Compulsory education includes four years of primary education and five years of junior secondary. for a total of eleven years. Students in Moldova generally start education on September 1st and continue until May for primary and secondary education or until June for higher education, split into two semesters. The academic year includes the summer break, fall break, winter break, and spring break.

Non-compulsory education in Moldova refers to the stages of education that are not mandated by the constitution but are still widely pursued by students. These include senior secondary education (usually three years beyond lower secondary), vocational education, and higher education (colleges and universities). To pursue higher education, students are required to pass the National Baccalaureate Exam, a standardized test.

Besides regular academic education, vocational education is very common in Moldova and provides access to training in the skills required to quickly enter the workforce. Vocational education may begin as early as secondary level, replacing senior secondary school and allowing students to obtain vocational skills early before continuing to either complete vocational education or to university studies.
