Overview of the General Education System

Martinique has been a French territory since 1635 and became a department of France in 1946. As an overseas department of France, Martinique operates under the French national education system. The Ministry of Education and Research of France directly oversees all educational institutions through the Rectorat de l’Académie de la Martinique. The official language of instruction is French, though Creole is also widely spoken and increasingly included in curricula. An Institute for Creole Studies and expanded Creole instruction in upper secondary grades reflect a growing emphasis on cultural inclusivity.

Education in Martinique is structured into four main stages such as pre-primary (école maternelle), primary (école élémentaire), lower secondary (collège), and upper secondary (lycée). The school year runs from early September to the end of June.

Pre-primary education begins at the age of two and is highly encouraged, although not mandatory. Primary school starts at age six and spans five years. Middle school, or collège, caters to students aged 11 to 15 and ends with the Diplôme National du Brevet exam. Secondary education continues at the lycée from ages 15 to 18. It leads to one of three types of baccalaureate qualifications in general, technological, or vocational. This degree is required for admission to the university.

According to data from 2020, there were 19,910 students aged 6 to 10, 17,609 students aged 11 to 14, 14,066 students aged 15 to 17, and 25,010 students aged 18 to 24 enrolled in schools. The literacy rate was 96.9% in 2014, with 98.0% for males and 96.1% for females. Illiteracy was reduced to just 0.2% among youth aged 15–24.

Moreover, Martinique’s system also offers adult education, special education, and vocational training. Vocational schools offer career-oriented programs, and many of their graduates eventually return for further education.

Compulsory education in Martinique spans from ages three to 16 and includes three years of pre-primary, five years of primary, and four years of lower secondary education. Children begin their formal education in école maternelle at age three. Although pre-primary is not mandatory in all French territories, it is required in Martinique under French law. Instruction focuses on language development, early literacy, numeracy, and social skills.

At the age of six, students transition into école élémentaire (primary school), where they remain until the age of 11. This five-year cycle emphasizes foundational subjects, including French, mathematics, science, and civic education.

Following this, students enter collège (middle school) for four years. The curriculum is unified nationally and includes core academic subjects and optional courses. At the end of collège, students take the Diplôme National du Brevet, which assesses their readiness for upper secondary education.

Education is free and monitored by the Rectorat, ensuring compliance with French standards. The compulsory phase effectively covers the basic academic needs of all students, with special accommodations for those with disabilities and learning differences integrated throughout the system.

Martinique’s higher education system is an extension of France’s national tertiary structure. The main institution is the Université des Antilles, which includes the former Martinique campus of the University of the Antilles and Guiana located in a suburb of Fort-de-France. Originally established in the 1880s as a School of Law and formally recognized as a university in 1982, it hosts the Schools of Letters and Human Sciences, as well as the School of Law and Economics. It also includes an affiliated teacher training institution, the Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres.

The university is part of the Académie de la Martinique and offers degrees equivalent to those awarded in mainland France. These include the Licence (bachelor’s), Master's, and Doctorate levels. While many students still choose to pursue studies in mainland France, particularly due to the broader program options, scholarships are still available to support mobility. The region also supports vocational and technical higher education through institutes affiliated with the Ministry of Education.
