Overview of the General Education System

Jordan’s education system had undergone significant transformation since the country’s independence in 1946. Initially, education was informal and largely dependent on religious institutions. However, with the establishment of the Ministry of Education in 1956, structured reforms were introduced to expand access and improve quality. Over the decades, Jordan has achieved high literacy rates, and its education system is considered one the most advanced in the Middle East. The government places a strong emphasis on education as a means of economic and social development.

Jordan’s education system is divided into three main levels:

Pre-Primary Education (Kindergarten)
Basic Education (Primary and Lower Secondary): This included grades 1–10; for the age of 6–16, this is compulsory and free in public schools
Secondary Education: This includes grades 11–12, for the age group of 16–18.

Students take the Tawjihi (General Secondary Education Certificate Examination) at the end of Grade 12, which determines their eligibility for university programs.

Higher education in Jordan is highly developed, with public and private universities, community colleges, and vocational institutes. The country has 10 public universities, 19 private universities, and 50+ community colleges.
