Overview of the General Education System

The education system of the Czech Republic has a vibrant historical foundation that dates back to 1774 when compulsory schooling was first introduced. This established commitment to education is evident in the country's modern system, which is regulated and supervised by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MEYS or MŠMT in Czech). This ministry is responsible for public administration in education, youth, sports, and international cooperation in these fields.

The Czech Republic’s educational system comprises several distinct levels. The pre-primary, primary, secondary, post-secondary, and tertiary education. Pre-primary education caters to children between the ages of 2 and 6 and is provided in nursery schools. Since September 2017, it has been compulsory for children in their final pre-primary year (age 5), ensuring that they are adequately prepared for elementary education.

Primary and lower secondary education are delivered through a unified system of nine-year basic schools (základní školy), which serves children from ages 6 to 15. These are divided into two stages. The first covers grades 1 to 5, and the second covers grades 6 to 9. Alternative forms of lower secondary education are also offered in multi-year general secondary schools and eight-year conservatories.

At the upper secondary level, students aged 15 to 18 or 19 can pursue general or vocational programs at upper secondary schools. Graduates may earn one of three qualifications such as secondary education with a Maturita examination, secondary education with a vocational education and training (VET) certificate, or general secondary education. The Maturita exam is required for progression to tertiary education.

Instruction is primarily conducted in the Czech language. Nevertheless, some programs particularly at the tertiary level are offered in English to cater to the international student body.

On the other hand, vocational education plays a significant role in the Czech system as there are approximately 70.5% of students in upper secondary education enrolled in VET programs, the second-highest rate among EU-27 countries.

Meanwhile, special education policies ensure that students with special needs can attend mainstream schools. This is supported by the 2016 inclusive education reform and governed by Ordinance No. 27/2016 Sb. Adult education in the Czech Republic encompasses general, vocational, and interest-based learning, supporting lifelong education.

The country's assurance to higher learning is also demonstrated by its literacy rate of over 99%. What’s more remarkable is that the Czech Republic’s higher education sector attracts a substantial international student population, with approximately 50,000 international students out of a total of around 299,000 tertiary students. These numbers make the nation a notable hub for global education in Europe.

Compulsory education in the Czech Republic covers nine years. This begins at the age of 6 and concludes by the age of 15. Although attendance in early childhood education (pre-primary level) is not universally mandatory for all ages, it is compulsory for children in their final pre-primary year, starting from age 5. This requirement was introduced to ensure that all children receive adequate preparation before transitioning to the primary level.

The primary and lower secondary education structure is integrated into the basic school system (základní školy), which spans grades 1 to 9. The first stage, which spans grades 1 to 5, focuses on foundational knowledge and skills. The second stage covers grades 6 to 9, provides more subject-specific instruction. After completing compulsory education, students may choose from various upper secondary options that shape their future academic or vocational paths.

Tertiary professional schools and higher education institutions provide higher education in the Czech Republic. This forms a system that reflects both tradition and modernization. The system comprises three primary cycles of study such as Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees, along with non-degree courses and lifelong learning options such as retraining programs.

A Bachelor’s degree generally requires three years of study and covers a broad overview of specialized fields. Graduates may choose to complete their studies by passing a final exam and defending a Bachelor’s thesis, or they may progress to a Master’s program.

Meanwhile, the Master’s degree pathway offers two options such as a continuous five- to six-year program, or a two-year program following a Bachelor’s degree. Completion involves passing state final exams and defending a thesis, and for certain fields, obtaining an engineering degree is possible particularly in technical or economic disciplines.

Students seeking advanced specialization may continue into Doctoral programs, which require significant research output, publications, and sometimes teaching or practical training components.

Czech higher education institutions also offer alternative learning forms such as retraining courses, university programs for seniors, and pedagogical qualification studies. Students can pursue education through full-time (daily) or distance (extramural) study modes, or a combination of both. Tuition at public universities remains free for those who qualify, though students over the age of 26 lose eligibility for certain state benefits, including health insurance.

The Czech Republic has over 60 universities and higher education institutions, including the historic Charles University in Prague, founded in 1348, which is the oldest university in Central Europe. Today, Charles University ranks 291st globally in the QS World University Rankings and is joined by seven other Czech universities listed among the world’s top 1000.
