Training Pathway:

Becoming a lawyer in China requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized university. The degree program typically spans four years, during which students study subjects such as civil law, criminal law, constitutional law, administrative law, and procedural law. Many lawyers also pursue Master’s Degrees in Law to specialize in particular areas such as international law, corporate law, or intellectual property law.

Certification Requirements:

After completing their legal education, aspiring lawyers must pass the highly competitive National Judicial Examination (NJE), also known as the Unified Legal Professional Qualification Examination. This comprehensive exam tests candidates on various areas of Chinese law, international law, and legal procedures. Successful candidates must then complete a one-year internship at a law firm or government legal office.

Once they meet these requirements, candidates can apply for a Lawyer's Practice Certificate issued by the Ministry of Justice, allowing them to practice law in China. To work as a practicing lawyer, individuals must register with a local Bar Association.

Continuing Legal Education (CLE):

Lawyers in China are required to participate in continuous legal education (CLE) to maintain their license and keep up with changes in the legal system, especially in areas affected by frequent reforms and international legal standards.
