Overview of the General Education System

Prince Edward Island (PEI) is Canada’s smallest province. It has developed a public education system that is bilingual, community-centered, and aligned with national standards. The system is supervised by the Department of Education and Early Years. The provincial agency administers the curriculum development, teacher certification, and student assessment.

Within this framework, the language of instruction is provided through two education authorities. The Public Schools Branch serves the English-language population, while the Commission scolaire de langue française manages the French-language education. In lieu of bilingualism, the province also supports French Immersion programs, which are offered in two formats: early immersion beginning in kindergarten and late immersion starting in Grade 7. This arrangement reflects PEI’s cultural heritage and its commitment to uphold both official languages of Canada.

The public school system extends from Kindergarten through Grade 12, structured into three stages: Elementary (Kindergarten–Grade 6), Intermediate (Grades 7–9), and Senior High (Grades 10–12). The senior high level operates mainly on a semester system, with two equal terms per year, and students earn credits toward graduation in Grades 10, 11, and 12.

School calendar runs from early September to late June, totaling between 195 and 197 instructional days annually. Assessment plays an essential role in the system. For example, students must complete a provincial exam in Grade 11 Mathematics, which accounts for 25% of the final grade in the subject.

The PEI also acknowledges the importance of early learning. Although kindergarten begins formal schooling, the province has introduced pre-primary programs and early childhood initiatives to strengthen school readiness, particularly in literacy and numeracy. Aside from public education, there are private and faith-based schools, though they serve a much smaller proportion of the population. The system is also responsive to special education needs and adult learning, ensuring inclusive education across all levels.

In recent decades, PEI have focused on strengthening French-language education, including literacy outcomes, and equity of access across rural and urban areas. The French Education, Programs and Services Division plays a crucial role in designing curricula for Francophone schools and second-language programs, which makes bilingual instruction accessible to both Anglophone and Francophone students. These policies measures the province continuous efforts to refine its education system to ensure high-quality instruction and smooth transitions to higher education study or the workplace.

Education in Prince Edward Island is compulsory from ages six to 16. It covers Grades 1 through 10. Kindergarten is offered for children aged five but is not mandatory. The progression structure is Elementary (K–6), Intermediate (7–9), and Senior High (10–12). Assessments such as the Grade 11 Mathematics provincial exam are incorporated into the system to ensure accountability and readiness for further study. According to the PEI’s law, students must remain enrolled until age 16, although most continue through Grade 12 to complete secondary education.

Prince Edward Island has a small but well-developed higher education arena with four public institutions. It includes the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), Holland College, Maritime Christian College, and Collège de l’Île. The Atlantic Veterinary College, located at UPEI in Charlottetown, is one of the five veterinary schools in Canada and a leading center for veterinary education and research.

The UPEI offers undergraduate and graduate programs, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees, across fields such as Arts, Science, Business, Education, and Nursing. Furthermore, Holland College provides career-focused diplomas, certificates, and applied degrees, with a strong emphasis on technical training, trades, and applied sciences. Collège de l’Île specializes in French-language post-secondary education to support Acadian and Francophone communities. Maritime Christian College offers faith-based programs at the tertiary level.

Admission requirements vary as universities require a high school diploma with prerequisite courses, while college programs may require completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. On the other hand, graduate admission requires a completed Bachelor’s degree, with Doctoral programs requiring a Master’s or equivalent research background. Accreditation and oversight are provided by the provincial government in collaboration with national quality assurance bodies.
